Under the stars of a billion galaxies the night sky sat above us, still, as though guiding us to our next destination. </p> <p>“Head west on the 40 for like 30 miles and you’re just going to head past the casino with the big arrows in the parking lot. Big arrows. Giant arrows. They light up and blink and shit. You can’t miss them.”</p> <p>You certainly cannot.</p> <p>Driving in the dark out of Acoma, down a highway the lights of which were outmatched only by the stars above, our reservation induced tranquility was replaced, abruptly, by the arrows of Jesse Pinkman casino itself. Dipping down into the desert before rising up above a sandy knoll, the darkness which for so long had surrounded us dissipated and was replaced by the excruciatingly bright lights of <em>Route 66 Casino</em>. </p> <p>Steph and I left nature’s darkness in exchange for man’s light. Pulling into the parking lot outside Route 66 Casino, this marvel of juxtaposition which had so initially beckoned us was replaced by the question of <em>gambling</em>. </p> <p>It has already been decided that the day Steph and I win the lottery, <em>Big Whiskey</em> will be built, and so too will the <em>Aztek</em>. That’s just how we roll. The only thing yet to occur is us actually <em>playing</em> the lottery to win. Sitting in the parking lot that Friday evening, we decided that together we would gamble and naturally assumed - like every other gambler in the world - that we <em>would</em> win. With that in mind, and still being on the Indian reserve, Steph and I <em>nearly</em> ventured into the neon-lit doors of the juxtaposed casino ready to cash in on our soon-to-be-achived winnings. </p> <p>However, just like the night sky behind us, this dream quickly died when it was revealed that, indeed, Steph was too young to gamble… With that, we headed back towards Albuquerque. </p> <p>The twinkling lights of the stars of a billion galaxies above appeared to drop to the floor of the desert, as we descended down into the dusty wilderness of New Mexico’s largest city, Albuquerque, to be greeted by the billion <em>and one</em> lights of the city which has become home to perhaps America’s greatest product - Breaking Bad.</p> <p>We had arrived in Walter White country, and we had a job to do.</p> <p>It is not often that one has lunch with *the* Heisenberg, but Steph and I did. With less than 18 hours to go before our meeting with <em>the one who knocks</em>, we found ourselves in perhaps the coolest restaurant and bar to exist in Duke City. </p> <p>The Elephant Bar offers a stark and intriguing contrast to the world outside. Sat in the centre of a city at least 8,000 miles from the nearest wild elephant, the <em>Elephant</em> Bar is adorned with Indiana Jones style suitcases and antiquities. Basking in a shroud of its own perception of travel and exploration, the menu represents the stories upon which this chain of restaurant is built. From sushi to buffalo, the Elephant Bar offers its patrons - including Steph and I, hungry and delirious - a range of diversity indicative of the country it sustains. Sitting in splendorous denial, we continued to ignore the increasingly present issue of a lack of accommodation…</p> <p>Finding a place to sleep, both more comfortable <em>and</em> more spacious than our beloved Pearl, at midnight, is something which Steph and I have become accustomed to. We have also become accustomed to getting lucky; which is as much a curse as it is a blessing. Driving for 15 hours with the horizon being our constant destination, hotels and motels alike remain always beyond what our eyes can see.
